I don’t know of any young boys in Oakland California who aren’t fascinated by pirates. These hardened marauders are not afraid of anything. They get to sail the seas, plunder at will, and wield their swords in dangerous duels. All without having to answer to Mom, take a bath, or eat their vegetables.

The buccaneers in “The Day I Became A Pirate,” however, have a vulnerability – one of their band is sick and the other men don’t know how to help him. The pirate crew weighs anchor off a beach and rows their small dinghy into shore where a young boy is walking on the beach. Though afraid, the lad gathers his courage and puts his mind to the task at hand – diagnosing the problem and restoring health to the desperate bandit.

Grateful for his quick wits and resourcefulness in successfully treating the man, the captain not only gives the boy his loaded treasure chest but bestows pirate hood upon him. The story emphasizes the importance of bravery in the face of uncertainty, friendship with people different from yourself, and the humanity in every person, regardless of their appearance and manner.

Because the boy is unnamed and the adventure is written in first-person, it is easy for Jack Sparrow wannabes in Oakland California to identify with the hero and imagine themselves in his shoes (or lack thereof).
